FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Moorestown Township and Virtua partner to preserve historic Truxtun House

Moorestown Township is pleased to announce the acquisition of 730 Marne Highway—also known as the Truxtun House—from Virtua - Memorial Hospital Burlington County (more commonly known as Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, part of Virtua Health). Dating back to approximately 1770, the property is among the oldest surviving historic homes in Moorestown. Virtua, which purchased the property in 2008, agreed to sell it to the Township to support Moorestown’s preservation of this historically significant property.

The Truxtun House is located on a four-acre parcel and is tucked between two office buildings. According to the Moorestown Historical Society, the property was originally known as “Woodlawn,” with the oldest portion of the home likely constructed around 1770 by Joshua Bispham. One of the site’s most notable residents was Commodore Thomas Truxtun, a distinguished naval officer who served during the Revolutionary War after being appointed by George Washington. By 1812, the Truxtun family relocated to the larger, 40-acre Woodlawn “plantation” elsewhere in Moorestown.

As part of its ongoing commitment to preserving Moorestown’s historic character, the Township adopted Ordinance No. 6-2025, establishing a Historic Preservation Commission and a designated Historic District. In addition to properties located within the Historic District, seven individual Historic Sites were designated throughout the township, including the Truxtun House.

Since 2013, the Truxtun House has been tenant-occupied, and Virtua had previously considered redevelopment options for the site.  After adoption of the Ordinance, Virtua and the Township engaged in discussions about conveyance of the Truxtun House to the Township as a means of achieving the Township’s goal of preserving the property.   Through a cooperative, constructive process, the Township and Virtua reached a mutually beneficial agreement that resulted in this acquisition. The Township appreciates Virtua’s partnership in this effort, which allows Moorestown to formally designate and preserve the Truxtun House as a Historic Site and protect an important piece of the community’s history for future generations.

"This property and home are an important part of Moorestown’s history,” said Sue Mammarella, Councilwoman of Moorestown. “The township is deeply grateful for the cooperative approach taken by Virtua Health throughout this process. Their willingness to work with us allowed for a positive resolution that benefits the entire community.”
